10K Webdesign is proud to support Just Label It -- an initiative to demand that the Food and Drug Administration provides labeling of genetically-engineered and genetically-modified ingredients.
In the interest of transparency and consumer choice, we find it backwards and baffling that most other developed countries, like the entire European Union, Australia, Brazil, Japan, Russia and even China – have laws requiring labeling of genetically engineered foods, but the United States does not. Polls have repeatedly shown that the vast majority of Americans – over 90% in most studies – believe GE foods should be labeled.
As ABC News stated, “Such near-unanimity in public opinion is rare.”

We sent out our 2011 annual newsletter (really! we only send out one e-mail a year!) to the very lucky people on our connections list.
Thank you so much for the support you've given us since 2004, when we launched 10K Group as a web design and development firm serving progressive organizations, green businesses, and women-owned & minority-owned companies.
We look forward to continued success with you as our valued clients, customers, and partners.

For many people starting out, their website is their first step towards professionalism, so we feel strongly about doing the best we can to make sure the new website supports the business growth."

Today, Facebook announced an upgrade to a new layout for Facebook Fans pages.
Most 10K Webdesign clients do not have to do anything different, but if you are using custom FBML tabs, please make sure to preview the changes prior to making the upgrade. The biggest issue is a change in width for the layout, but Facebook will also be deprecating and phasing out support for custom FBML tags.

Consider the following:
1) One in eight of us on the planet lack access to clean, safe drinking water.
Remember the last time you poured yourself a glass of water, boiled something for your meal, or washed your vegetables or fruits in water? The 7/8 of us on the planet who have access to clean drinking water are fortunate - we live like royalty! As part of a global perspective, let's also commit to bringing water to the 1/8 of our planet who does not have it.
2) Unsafe drinking water and lack of sanitation kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war.
Water-borne diseases include E. coli, salmonella, cholera and hepatitis A. The lack of safe water leads to 42,000 deaths each week, including children. Let's do our part.
3) More people have access to a cell phone than to a toilet.
Today, 2.5 billion people lack access to toilets. Millions of tons of sewage spill into our rivers and streams, contaminating drinking water and causing disease. Let's focus on cleanliness and infrastructure by assisting our global family members in receiving access to basic sanitation.
Please blog, tweet, or share this post on Facebook. we request your help in reaching people who care.

Castro Valley Sanitary District is pleased to announce the redesign of its website, www.cvsan.org. Not only has the look of the website been changed but the content and usability has been enhanced to make it more user-friendly.
The redesigned website has 63 pages plus additional subpages, and features reorganized content, a “Search” feature, a “Page Reader” for reading guides and newsletters, online fill-in forms, and interactive sorting games. Two interactive games entitled “Recycle It?!” and “Composting Corner” were developed by Castro Valley local, MonkeyByte, and is designed to help users determine what goes in the blue recycling and green organics carts.

QueridoMundo and 10K Webdesign are pleased to present Grow Your Oakland www.growyouroakland.org, a website and billboard ad campaign encouraging Oakland residents to garden.
The campaign utilizes unused billboard space and Bay Area Rapid Transit ads at the highly-trafficked West Oakland commuter stop. Colorful and informative guides offered through the website include a local farmer's market guide and a gardening primer created in partnership with City Slicker Farms.
'It is important to me to support urban gardening efforts,' said Monica S. Flores, principal at 10K Webdesign. 'We work with a number of green, organic, and gardening related websites and we stand behind the move towards growing your own food.'
'One of the project's messages, Grow Your Own, underscores the basic right we all have to plant and raise our own food,' said Querido Galdo, primary designer for the site. 'The Grow Your Oakland site was originally planned as a follow-up resource for beginning vegetable gardeners'. The site currently also includes resources on local wildlife, nature walks, and local artists.

We are always doing research for our clients on new methods of distribution, disseminating your message, and building your community of clients.
Here are five ways we encourage you to use social networking tools on your existing site. We have many more free articles on Monica's business blog: A Successful Woman (search the blog for the tag 'networking').
A Twitter account is free and is an easy way to increase your ability to make 'micro-updates' to your site. We post to our Twitter accounts and one of them updates our own homepage. All Twitter postings are search engine fodder so when you consistently post on your top ten keywords, you slowly raise your ability to rise to the top within your chosen field. Some people build their Twitter followers by doing Twitter-specific events or promotions.
Facebook for Business
We recommend setting up a Facebook for Business page: these have recently been updated and now a Facebook page can be for a business profile. Use these and Facebook Groups to build a sense of community and have Facebook-only giveaways or promotions.
For professional services you'll want to post recommendations to your Linkedin.com profile. Also consider posting informational items like your Amazon reading list, your SlideShare powerpoint presentations, or your Blog postings to your LinkedIn profile.
An old stand-by, we highly recommend that you install Wordpress onto your host (many hosts offer one-click installation) and use the blog to expand your opinions, feedback, articles, or informational resources on your particular subject area. It's possible to post the first few postings or the most recent titles of your posts to your regular website homepage: consider this as a way to extend the sense of looking 'behind-the-scenes' and providing more information about your company.
Claim your Identity
It's important to claim your own identity (for your business name, your personal 'handle' or your gmail or group accounts) so that it's easy to find you online. Do a Google Search on your business name, personal name, or main keywords to determine your current status. Does someone else have a similar name to you? Once you get a sense of how you are ranking within search engine listings, you can use the above tools to 'pad out' your results with more relevant links.
February 2, 2009
Does your website work for you? Should it? We think so. Of course, we're in business to make your website work for you, so don't believe us, look at the numbers.
Case #1: A Successful Woman
Here's a download PDF of Analytics (opens in a new window) for one of our sites. This is twelve months of steady growth data for one of our personal websites that we've created.
When we first started planning for for this site www.asuccessfulwoman.com, we wanted to build organic traffic through blog links, articles, and referring sites. We wanted visitors to grab the information they need and use the site as a resource. We also wanted to increase website traffic.
There are different levels of access to this site, including a free e-newsletter signup, a free blog with over 280 articles, paid membership options, online training, a social networking group, product and service reviews, and advertising opportunities.
For 2008, we wanted to get the website to the very top of Google and Yahoo! search engine listings for 'a successful woman' and we've achieved that.
For 2009 the plan is to increase our e-newsletter signup and the number of active participants in the Facebook group.
Case #2: 10K Webdesign
Here's a download PDF of Analytics (opens in a new window) for our own site. This is twelve months of stable data.
For our site, our primary goals are to answer your questions before you connect with us directly to start your website. Notice that the average length of time on the site for our visitors is 18 minutes and 39 seconds. Take your hourly rate and divide it by 4: that's the amount we believe the website is saving us by having our existing website resources 'do the work' of informing and explaining our process to you.
Consider that, as a customer, one can do this research in the comfort of a home or business, on any time schedule (24/7) and without having to pick up the phone and call or interact with anyone.
Once our customers do their research and they're ready to get started, they typically contact us through our contact form with a clear list of what they need, which we can then implement in a straightforward manner.
Would you like to implement these kinds of solutions on your own site?
You can sign up for your own free analytics at: http://www.google.com/analytics. Get and install the snippet of code that goes on the bottom of your pages to track who visits your website.
10K Webdesign utilizes a variety of tools to achieve specific results. This year we'll be focusing on 'Extending your Brand' through social networking tools. If you would like the same treatment for your own company website, we invite you to participate as a beta-tester. Let us know what you'd like to achieve with your own organizational or business website.
Thanks to our 2008 clients!
We are so grateful for your trust in us. Thank you for choosing us to work with you to make your website a reality.

On June 12, 2008, Monica Flores was a featured presenter at the women's business center on Honolulu. The topic of her talk to 25 participants was: Web Site Design: How It Looks vs. How It Works
She explored items such as: How important are pictures? How many buttons are too many? How many are too few? How often should you refresh your copy? How do you keep your content engaging and 'sticky?' and how your Content Management System (CMS) allows you to control your page content through items like a calendar of events, e-mail subscriber list, or product inventory.
Joining Monica Flores was artist Michelle Henry, owner of Tea at 1024.

Kilohana Elementary School, on Molokai's east end, plays leadership role in safeguarding our island
Celebrating Earth Week with biodegradable, non-GMO-based corn utensils for school meals
(Kaunakakai, Molokai) Earth Day, held every year on April 22, provides a time for communities, individuals, and institutions to highlight issues surrounding environmental sustainability. On Molokai, one major issue that has a profound impact upon the environment is non-degradable plastics. Kilohana Elementary School is taking a step towards building a sustainable future by using compostable utensils made out of corn for school meals during Earth Week.
Molokai residents Genesis Lodise, Monica Flores, Pat Harris, Liz Price, and Yonie Harris originally initiated the idea to use corn-based utensils, and they contacted Kilohana Elementary school principal Leighton Kawai to encourage a pilot program to use these utensils.
'Here on Molokai we would like to do our part to protect the environment,' said Lodise, whose son attends the school. 'Plastic ends up in land fills where it will remain for possibly thousands of years. Plastic can also leach chemicals into the ground water. We'd like to help provide a positive example of environmental stewardship for the community during the week surrounding Earth Day 2008.'
'Every day for both breakfast and lunch, the students use a fork or spoon, for a single serving.' said Flores. 'Kilohana is doing a great job in raising awareness that there are other options instead of plastic and petrochemicals.'
The corn-based forks, and spoons are heat resistant and biodegradable, and are made with non-GMO corn. As a way to highlight awareness, flyers with information about the cutlery and their importance will be provided to teachers and staff as a way to start a conversation about Earth Day.
For more information on Kilohana Elementary School, contact Principal Leighton Kawai at 808-558-2200.
10K Founder Monica S. Flores has become a lender for Kiva.org, the microfinance lender that supports entrepreneurs in developing countries.
The organization offers lenders the opportunity to give small loans (as little as $25) to individual men and women to offset capital investments, inventory purchases, and business startup costs. Kiva.org groups loans together so that each qualifying entrepreneur raises the loan amount they seek.
'I'm so pleased to find a group that allows me to support my passion of empowering women of color in business,' says Flores.
Flores has pledged to donate 10% of net proceeds from book sales.
Many thanks to all who supported our company in 2007. We look forward to working to enhance your website presence even more in 2008!

A Successful Woman's Handbook: Fifty-one Ways to Build your Community of Clients Online -- How Women are Using the Internet to Grow their Business, Reach the Right Customers, and Make a Difference
Monica S. Flores's passion in empowering, educating and connecting women of color culminates in her first book, coming in early 2008. The book is targeted to women in business who use their websites to market, promote, inform, and sell online. Readers will learn how to effectively increase net profits, build a base of loyal fans, and improve their triple bottom line after implementing the enclosed tips and tools for websites.
'Everyone has a level playing field on the Web' says Filipina-American businesswoman Flores, a programmer since age 9. She's collected eight years of research as a web consultant into this easy-to-use, practical resource. She focuses on business- building tools and their immediate application on your website to increase your online sales.
Sharing is the key to success, and Flores' down-to-earth suggestions give women in business a competitive edge through smart, spirited internet marketing. There's a handy instruction list on web resources online. Consultants and retailers will appreciate the straightforward approach in this easy-to-read guidebook.
Interested readers are invited to visit the ASuccessfulWoman.com website for more ideas, tips, business resources, and support. There are membership opportunities, sponsorship links, and a job board for both employers and candidates.
October 4, 2007: Because of 10K's work supporting progressive candidates and causes, the group was invited to join the Democratic National Committee's annual listing of minority political companies. The listing, compiled by Brazile & Associates, LLC with the assistance of the Asian Pacific Islander Caucus, the Black Caucus, the Hispanic Caucus, and the Native American Coordinating Council, includes specialists in campaign management, fundraising, voter registration, get-out-the-vote efforts, and other political categories.
10K Group LLC is at the top of the listing (see page 1) and offers website development and internet services. 'We are thrilled to support progressive candidates and causes, women, and minorities. Thanks for your support, and if you're considering developing your website, we look forward to supporting you,' said Monica Flores, company founder.
'Influencer: The Power to Change Anything' arrives in bookstores on October 1, 2007. From the authors of the New York Times bestseller 'Crucial Conversations,' the authors Kerry Patterson, Joseph Grenny, David Maxfield, Ron McMillan, and Al Switzler have distilled over fifty years of social science research to identify case studies and lessons from world class 'change geniuses.'
Says author Grenny, 'Our new book describes vital work done by the most influential social scientists of the past 50 years who have shown repeatedly that most any behavior can be changed if you just know how to do it... The stories are astounding and the principles are life changing. We've felt a tremendous sense of responsibility to do justice to these ideas.' The authors also give profound insights on the actual ways we may answer the question 'How does one person change the world?'

'Amazing results weren't accomplished through power, politics, or wealth, but through the most powerful tool of all... Influence.'

Principal Monica Flores has started up 10K's second location in Hawai'i! With a focus on minority businesses, green businesses, and women-owned businesses, 10K Webdesign fits well with the island climate of entrepreneurship and sharing. Our first Native client is Island Rising, a husband-and-wife team of self-taught artists who create keepsake paintings.
The state of Hawai'i is 75% minority, and for many, the focus for life is on family, compassion, tolerance, environmental stewardship, and respect for the 'aina', or land.
Flores focuses on supporting minority women and green entrepreneurs and returns to the Bay Area on a periodic basis.
10K Group LLC is proud to announce their signature has been added to the list of Business for a Fair Minimum Wage supporters, which includes the CEOs of the US Women's Chamber of Commerce, Costco, and Small Business Majority.
For a record-breaking 10 years, the federal minimum wage has not been raised; however, a fast-growing campaign led by small and large
business owners are saying a higher minimum wage is in fact good for business.
Kirsten Poole, co-owner of Kirsten's Cafe and Dish Caterers in Silver Spring, MD, says, 'Trying to save money by shortchanging my employees would be like skimping on ingredients. I'd lose more than I saved because of declining quality, service, reputation and customer base. You can't build a healthy business or a healthy economy on a miserly minimum wage.'
While the Congress debates the issue, states that have led the way by raising their minimum wages above the current $5.15 minimum wage have had better employment and small business trends than states that have not.
